EXPERIENCE BEHIND MY EXPRESSIVE FIGURATIVE ART
The Silent Language of The Unspoken Narratives
19/11/23
Growing up, I always found solace in art as a means of self-expression. However, it wasn't until I discovered expressive figurative painting that I truly felt able to capture the complexity and intensity of my emotions. This practice resonated with me on a deep level, as it offered a safe platform to explore the depths of my experiences and to communicate them in a way that felt cathartic.

Unlike the traditional figurative painting, which aims for accuracy and realism, expressive figurative allows me for a more subjective and personal interpretation. It allows me to delve into my inner world and bring forth private emotions, creating a representation that resonates on a deep personal level. Through this, I have found a way to not only express myself authentically but also connect with others who may be experiencing similar struggles.

Based on my experiences growing up as an Indonesian-born Chinese minority, it was a result of the constant pressure to conform to societal norms and expectations.
As a young child, I often felt isolated and misunderstood, struggling to find my identity within the cultures.
The act of painting allowed me to explore and express the complex emotions that came with this identity crisis, providing a sense of release and understanding. Through the use of vivid colours, bold brushstrokes, and distorting imagery, I was able to visually depict the inner anxiety I experienced, creating a tangible representation of my struggles. Not only provides a sense of relief but also enables a deeper understanding and acceptance of my own anxieties.
Moreover, the expression of anxiety in art can resonates with the audience, who may also be grappling with similar emotions in a way that words alone cannot.
By embracing anxiety in my artistic practices, I'm not only finding solace and healing for myself, but also create a space for empathy and dialogue, fostering a sense of community and support for those facing similar challenges.
